Class reptilia; snake 

 

Initial ideas on subject of reptilia before choosing to look mainly at snakes.

One of the reasons i chose to focus on snakes, Alexander Mcqueen largely inspired a lot of this units work.

Creating my own snake skin, with an imprint from one of my bags with PVA.

..with latex, largely in response to Mcqueens work.

Using latex and manipulating the colour with acrylic paint.

Pva with metalic paints.

Sampling artist holly fulton who uses snake skin and bold prints.

And weaving, then securing weave by hand sewing

 

using free stitch onto dissoslvable filml to create the look of the weave and create the diamond shapes.

Creating snake skin patterns by ti-dye and then free stitch

 

same technique but covering material in thin layer of acrylic for colour

Attempting to free stitch into a mould of latex and acrylic paint

didnt go to well as it wouldnt stay threaded but it was worth a try.

Using soft colours and silk (like Marit Fujiwara) then gathering the material by using white cotton on free stitch.

I then went for the opposite effect by applying interfacing to keep the material flat and using a bright coloured cotton to free stitch my pattern on.

First ever try at knitting! well it didnt go too bad, i wanted to create a more holey material so progressed by using a thinner thread.

So i used a thinner yarn and tried it on a lot of a larger scale, the holes weren't actually supposed to be there but i ended up liking the effect as the shapes in snakeskin arent all the same size etc - a happy-accident.

This is zig-zag stitch onto dissolvable film...onto tracing paper, the dissolvable film we had at the time wouldnt move freely around the the machine it just kept sticking therefore i chose to put some tracing paper underneath thinking i would be able to remove it after (i was wrong) but i ended up really liking the effect again, another happy-accident.

This material was like a piece of floow lino, that already had a nice snake-skin effect to it, i chose to free stitch into it with metalic thread.

First ever go on the laser cutter?!lots of firsts and happy accidents in this unit i know, anyway, i used the laser cutter to engrave a print on to a piece of canvas.

The same print onto leather, which as you can see didnt work as well as it was much thicker, i used free stitch again to give the pattern more depth.

Original inverse print engraved on thick leather.

One outcome, created in a 2 hour controlled assessment, using pva imprint, latex imprint, and the freestitch onto film and paper.

AS Work Textiles architecture

Unit 1 looking at Architecture

 

So i started out looking at architecture around my own home, then progressed to looking at architecture in England.

 

 

 

 



Looking at artists and recreating there work.

 

Visual research: I then began to look at how architecture differs in different countries. 



I particularly liked the idea of tepees and the native American architecture.



I sampled heat transfer prints for colours as the prints are always a lot brighter

and i planned on using this technique.

 

I digitally manipulated one of my drawings of a church to create an aztec diamond shape.
